An aerial view of two copies of the same book open to different pages. The first page spread has an image of a couple kissing passionately. The paper is cut at the base of the page to show a caption “Oh to be young and in love.” Opposite the image is the caption “I wonder if she’s sure.” The second book is opened to the spread directly after that of the first book, showing the same captions but with an image of a couple on their wedding day. This time the cutout in the paper reveals “I wonder if she’s sure.”

Book as window

Witness is a collection of photographs taken in New York City in the 1970s and 80s by eight photographers. Some images are accompanied by anonymous captions—instinctual assumptions—written by my friends and family. Through window-like page cutouts, Witness explores people-watching as an act of learning, assuming, and misinterpreting.
